Solar Panel Warranty UK 2026 — Performance, Product, Workmanship

Honest answer + the longer story behind the question.

Three warranties on every commercial solar install

UK commercial solar PV systems come with three distinct warranties:

  1. Performance warranty (panels) — manufacturer guarantees output won't fall below a stated % at year 25 (typical Tier-1: 87–88.85% at year 25). This is the warranty that defines panel longevity.
  2. Product warranty (panels and inverters) — manufacturer covers defects in materials and workmanship. Panels: 12–15 years (Tier-1) or up to 30 years (LONGi Hi-MO 9). Inverters: 5–12 years standard, 20–25 years on extended warranties.
  3. Workmanship warranty (installer) — covers defects in our installation work. Standard UK commercial: 10-year IWA insurance-backed warranty — meaning the workmanship is guaranteed even if we go out of business.

Why insurance-backed workmanship warranty matters

A 10-year workmanship warranty from your installer is only worth as much as the installer’s longevity. Many UK commercial solar installers from 2010–2018 went out of business, leaving clients with workmanship issues and no recourse. IWA insurance-backed warranties (Independent Warranty Association) attach the warranty to an insurance policy held with a major UK insurer — if the installer goes bust, the insurer steps in to honour the workmanship. This is now an industry standard requirement for commercial installs.

What happens after the warranty expires?

UK commercial solar PV systems typically run 30–40 years of useful service life. After the 25-year performance warranty expires, panels continue producing at 80–90% of nameplate (depending on actual degradation rate). Inverters are typically replaced once at year 12–15. Most clients choose to replace inverters with newer-generation hybrid units that integrate battery storage at the same time. End-of-life recycling is mandated by the UK WEEE Regulations, with the manufacturer/installer consortium funding the take-back.
