MCS approved solar panel installers: what approval actually means

Every partner in this directory is listed as MCS-certified, but the badge is widely misunderstood, so it is worth spelling out what it covers. MCS is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme — the UK quality mark for small-scale renewable installations. It certifies two things: the installer (the company is assessed against MCS installation standards, with sample installs inspected) and the products (panels, inverters and batteries must be MCS type-approved). When people search for MCS certified solar panel installers, that combination is what they are really asking for — and it matters commercially because an MCS certificate for the installation is what Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) licensees require before they will pay you for exported power.

MCS is often confused with the other badges an installer carries, and they do different jobs. NICEIC and NAPIT are electrical competence schemes: they assess whether a contractor's wiring and testing meet BS 7671, which every solar installation depends on but which says nothing about solar-specific design. RECC (the Renewable Energy Consumer Code) is a consumer-protection code governing sales conduct, deposits and contracts — valuable for householders, though business-to-business contracts sit largely outside consumer-code protection. Genuinely well-credentialed firms — the MCS accredited solar PV installers you should be shortlisting — typically hold MCS alongside NICEIC or NAPIT registration, because one covers the renewable installation standard and the other covers electrical competence.

Verification takes two minutes and is worth doing even for firms on curated lists of approved solar panel installers, including ours. Go to mcscertified.com and use the "Find an installer" search: enter the company name or MCS certification number, and check the listing is current and covers solar PV specifically — a firm can be MCS-certified for heat pumps but not solar. If an installer cannot point you to their live MCS register entry, treat that as your answer.

One honest caveat for factory-scale projects: MCS certification for solar PV applies to systems up to 50kW. Larger commercial arrays sit outside MCS scope, and any system exporting above 50kW needs a G99 grid connection application to the district network operator — a genuinely different discipline involving export limitation studies, protection settings and DNO negotiation. For large projects, evidence of delivered G99 applications matters more than any logo, which is why we vet partners for both. MCS certified solar installers with no G99 track record are the wrong fit for a 200kW roof, however good their domestic reviews.

Our vetting angle is simple: we are independent and supplier-neutral. No partner pays to appear in this directory, we hold no hardware distribution deals, and we match enquiries on region and project fit rather than commission. If you want to compare the wider market before choosing, our guide to the best commercial solar companies sets out how the national players stack up against strong regional specialists.

How do I check if an installer is MCS approved?

Search the official register at mcscertified.com using the company name or MCS number. Confirm the entry is live, matches the trading name on your quote, and covers solar PV as a technology — not just heat pumps or battery storage. You can also ask the installer for a recent MCS installation certificate number and cross-check it.

Do commercial solar installations need an MCS certified installer?

Not always — MCS matters mainly for SEG export eligibility and as a quality-assurance signal, and its solar PV scope runs up to 50kW. Larger commercial and industrial installations rely instead on G99 grid approval and electrical competent-person schemes such as NICEIC or NAPIT. We still favour MCS-certified partners because the discipline it enforces carries across to bigger projects.
